How can we mobilize the $ 300 billion needed to deploy ICTs and the Internet on the African continent? To discuss ways to achieve this ambitious goal, several personalities met on 9 May at one of Transform Africa 2018 panels: H.E.M. Bruno Nabagné Kone, Minister of Communication, Digital Economy and Post, Côte d’Ivoire, H.E.M. Clare Akamanzi, CEO, Rwanda Development Board, H.E.M. Dr. Hamadoun Toure, Executive Director, Smart Africa, Ashish Thakkar, Founder, Mara Group, Samba Bathily, CEO, ADS Group and Solektra International, Stephen Spengler, CEO, Intelsat and Brandon Freeman, in charge of Smart Cities at Leidos / Inmarsat. Among the proposals is the detailed planning of needs and the creation of a virtuous ecosystem involving all actors though PPPs, suggested by Clare Akamanzi on the basis of Rwanda’s successful experience, and, in the same spirit, the need to better pool together expertise and funds, underlined by Samba Bathily who went as far as to suggest the creation of a pan-African fund for ICT.
